LMSA partnered with the Rebound Institute to explore the opportunities of creating a thriving arts and entrepreneurial training facility in Oakland, further expanding Rebound Institute’s goal of addressing the combined needs of housing, employment, legal support, life skills training and college support. The new 7th Street building, located in an area previously known primarily for jails and courts, is designed as a destination providing inclusive, life-changing opportunities for formerly incarcerated students.

LMSA conducted a visioning and engagement process for an adaptive reuse of the existing building at 526/528 7th Street. The building will open onto 7th Street with a glass front, welcoming the community and revealing the creative energy inside. Meeting the vision of a welcoming, light-filled, productive and community-oriented environment, the design of the 25’ x 100’ lot will combine the existing two adjacent storefronts into a high-ceilinged space accommodating a classroom, a fully equipped maker space and workshop, tattoo studio, reception / gallery area, administrative offices, and outdoor patio. The classroom and maker space will provide space for financial literacy coaching, licensing support, and mentorship from established artists and creators. Housed in a new, separate structure connected by a shared courtyard, a tattoo training facility will offer professional mentorship, licensing guidance, and hands-on practice in a safe and structured environment.
