Stanford University Jasper Ridge Biological Preserve Corporation Yard
The Jasper Ridge Corporation Yard supports the nearly 1,200 acres of living laboratory and outdoor classroom that is Jasper Ridge Biological Preserve. Responding to the site’s topography, hydrology and vegetation, the corporation yard minimizes impact on the surrounding landscape while providing vehicle and equipment storage, workshop space, and staff offices.
The corporation yard recedes into the landscape. Three separate structures take the same simple, pitched roof form, referencing rural precedents. The buildings’ mostly solid outer surfaces contrast with their open interior faces, where related programs visually and physically connect to one another.
Guiding principals and design strategies include the following:
• Pre-engineered construction, with an emphasis on functional and durable space
• Fire and flood resistant structures
• Sustainable design and construction
• Minimal overall impact to the site
